Sticks and Stones
This evening Odin told Travis that someone called him a pest at preschool today. When Travis asked him who said it and how he responded, O replied with the girl's name and said, "I called her a pest back." I was surprised that Odin brought it up at all-he doesn't often discuss things that are bothering him with us. Father and son had a little discussion about how to respond when someone calls you something you don't like and it made me think about how hard this job, parenting, is going to get. I know he's going to be called a lot worse than "pest" in the coming years and I hope he always feels he can confide in and look to us for guidance while at the same time learning how to solve his own problems.

My grandmother delights in telling the story of the time I got so mad at her (for not lifting me up and carrying me) that I called her the worst thing I could think of.
ReplyDelete"You're a... a DEAD ANIMAL!"
Makes me wonder where "pest" came from.
O should have used his rhyming skills and tell her, "Oh, you meant to say I'm the best!"
ReplyDeleteIsn't is amazing how cruel kids can be already at such a young age? Arora tells me all the time how kids say mean things. Good for Odin for telling the truth and sounds like it was a good lesson. Parenting is tough, but I think you are pretty natural at it!
